Track Goes to State
Woodrow Wilson Middle School’s track season started the week before spring break and ended May 20th, 2017.
There were no official captains this year, only leaders who showed themselves to be responsible on each team. The coaches feel that the team did have one meet that was the best of the season. This meet was the Sectional meet at Rockridge High School on Saturday, May 13th. They feel that this was the best because they were able to qualify some kids for State for the first time.
Both 8th grade teams were able to earn Runner Up plaques, and they also had many personal bests that day. There were ten members that made it to State, six boys and four girls. Boys: Jaheim Mitchell, Treyvon Lee, Jayden Jackson, Chase Kwinski, Jackson McClellan, and Jaeger Norton. Girls: Shanijah Hunter, Bralee Trice, Audrey Lamphier, and Tayler Gilmore.
The team did have a rough patch in the middle of the season. Some things were stolen from some kids, and some of the team’s top athletes were out because they were ineligible. The team soon got it together and continued to do their very best and make their coaches proud. Mr. Perkins says that the best thing about this season was that they had some motivated kids who were really pushing themselves to move past the Conference meet and qualify for Sectionals. He also said that this season taught him that anything is possible and that the best thing an athlete can do is to rise up to any challenge and take a risk. This is the only way to improve and see what you are really capable of. He says that the coaches will just continue to push this attitude on the kids and encourage them to always aim high and work to earn what you can.
